A Researcher from Belarus Invited for Training

HICARE invited a researcher engaged in gene research in Belarus, where many people were exposed to radiation in the Chernobyl nuclear accident. She received one-month's training on the treatment of radiation disorders at the Hiroshima University Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine.

Name and Title of Trainee:

Maya Kryuko, Research Assistant
Belarusian Research Center of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology

Period of Training:

September 7 to October 5, 2009

Training Organizations (in order of visits):

Hiroshima University Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum etc.

Training Course:

Assessment of the biological effects of radiation

With Professor Akiro Kimura (right) at Hiroshima University Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine

Feedback:

I thank HICARE earnestly for giving me this opportunity to learn new method of molecular diagnosis and to visit Hiroshima. Although I had known that there are people exposed to radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I could truly understand their reality only after visiting the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum.
Many people were exposed to radiation in Belarus after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986. We know that the radiation and chemical substances that scattered after the accident caused tumors and genetic mutations in victims of radiation exposure and cellular mutation that can cause fetal deaths in the next generation.
I am engaged in work similar to a doctor of pathology, specifically in the field of genetic mutation inducing the development of tumors. The knowledge that I acquired in this training will be a help improving the molecular diagnosis of those who were exposed to radiation.
Everything that the training provided me was so useful! Thank you very much.
