With President Hiroo Dohy (President of HICARE)
During the training in Hiroshima, I viewed medical activities at various medical institutions and laboratories. I also visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, A-bomb Victim―The Monument of Hiroshima, and the Peace Flame. I was deeply impressed by exhibits that vividly convey the horror of the A-bombing.
[Takeichi Clinic]
I was strongly impressed by the job performance of Dr. Takeichi, and the well-organized medical examinations and expertise of the Clinic.
[Radiation Effects Research Foundation]
I listened to the history of the Foundation, its medical examinations for A-bomb survivors, and its research activities and results.
[Hiroshima University Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine]
I listened to the research direction and results of the Institute. In addition, I participated in a discussion about the risk of radiation in Belarus (after the nuclear accident in Chernobyl) and Semipalatinsk (after nuclear tests). I learned various methods for measuring exposure doses.
[Saiseikai Hiroshima Hospital]
I attended a surgery to remove the thyroid mass and learned a therapeutic approach to breast cancer. The hospital provided an extremely high level of treatment. I was surprised at the high level of treatment that the hospital provided and its excellent facilities.
[Hiroshima A-bomb Casualty Council]
I listened to the history of the Council and viewed how treatment, preventive measures and diagnosis are given there. I was deeply impressed by its organized job performance and its equipment and facilities such as the diagnostic instruments and the rehabilitation room.
[Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital & Atomic-bomb Survivors Hospital]
I listened to the background of establishment of the Hospital and viewed how human tissues of A-bomb survivors are examined.
Moreover, I visited the Department of Pathology and the Department of Diagnosis. I participated in medical examinations of patients with an ultrasound examiner and undertook diagnostic evaluation of two patients. I was able to acquire useful knowledge from researchers in cytology and histology.
I could have learned about the methodology in greater detail if I had had more time to spend at the hospital.
