Russia: Researcher Training Program

HICARE invited a researcher from the Medical Radiological Research Center in Russia for two months of training at the Hiroshima University Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine.

Name and Position:

Alexander Ivannikov
Leading Researcher, Medical Radiological Research Center

Period:

February 23 to April 26, 2005

Main Host Organizations:

Hiroshima University Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine

Training Course:

Course on radiation dosimetry (Physical dosimetry)

Training Scene: Hiroshima University Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine

Impressions:

I took part in a training course for radiation dose determination utilizing electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) of tooth enamel (ESR dosimetry). I would like to apply my newly acquired knowledge to re-evaluate the radiation exposure of those who live/lived in Chernobyl, South Ural, and Semipalatinsk. Thanks to HICARE’s well-organized program, I achieved my desired training objectives.

In terms of my lifestyle in Hiroshima, living everyday on and with my bicycle, my stay was very pleasant.

Medical Activities in Russia:

In Russia, I participate in a research program re-evaluating the radiation exposure of people living in areas affected by accidental radiation release; concretely, Chernobyl, South Ural, and Semipalatinsk. Via information regarding levels of radiation exposure, we will be able to specify groups of people who stand at risk for developing radiation-induced diseases. Furthermore, we aim to gather data regarding how much radiation exposure induces disease outbreak.
